A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent questions over operational security.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
